How to Care for Your Wool Products
At McNutt of Donegal, we’ve been weaving with nature’s finest fibre for over sixty years. Wool is the soul of our craft – warm, breathable, and beautifully sustainable. To help you get the most from your luxury wool throws, scarves and clothing, here’s how to care for them properly.
Can I wash wool in
a washing machine?
Yes, but gently. You can wash wool in your washing machine, as long as you use the wool cycle only. This setting uses cool water and a slow spin to protect the delicate natural fibres. Always wash with a mild wool detergent, and avoid fabric softeners or bleach, which can damage wool’s structure and softness. Click here to watch our washing wool guide.
General Wool Care Tips:
• Wool is naturally odour-resistant. A gentle airing outdoors on a dry day helps refresh your piece without needing to wash it.
• Spot clean small marks: Use a damp cloth and gently dab the area. Avoid scrubbing or wringing, which can distort the weave.
• Dry flat and reshape your item while damp and lay it flat on a clean towel.
• Never tumble dry wool, as it can shrink or lose shape.
What To Do About Pilling?
Pilling is those small bobbles that can appear on the surface of your wool product. It is a natural part of woollen fabrics, especially in areas that experience friction. It’s not a fault in the fabric, but a sign of the soft, fine wool fibres rising to the surface.
To remove pilling use a fabric comb or wool shaver gently across the surface. Avoid pulling pills off by hand, as this can damage the fibres underneath. Once removed, pills tend to reduce over time, and your wool piece will regain its smooth, luxurious finish.
